Zakat al-Mal (زكاة المال)

Zakat al-Mal is the annual charity Muslims give from their wealth. It is one of the five pillars of Islam and a powerful act of worship that helps support those facing hardship in our communities.

If your wealth reaches the nisab threshold and has remained in your possession for one lunar year, 2.5% of that wealth becomes due as zakat. This typically includes savings, cash, business income, investments, gold and silver, and other qualifying assets.

According to the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) and the Australian Fatwa Council statement for 1447H | 2026, the official nisab thresholds as of 21 February 2026 are:

Gold Nisab
85 grams of 21 carat gold
$17,242.25 AUD ($202.85 per gram)

Silver Nisab
609 grams of pure silver
$2,338.56 AUD ($3.84 per gram)

If your total eligible wealth equals or exceeds the nisab amount and a full lunar year has passed, you are required to give 2.5% of that wealth as zakat.
